Upper East Side, home of a wealthy older couple and a decent sized private art collection. I was referred by a friend who told me they needed someone who knew about art, and preferably a journalist, to catalog their collection and write some background info on the pieces.
Lily: I was a journalist, I'm now a copywriter, I assisted for five years to the Art Students League of New York and I...
Woman: Enough, darling, enough. You're more than qualified. We have the list we gave the insurance, that could help.
Lily: Oh great, give me the list and I can work on it during my trip* and have it ready when I come back in a month.
Woman: Oh. No, no. That won't do. You have to do it in person!
Lily: But you have no access to Internet. That would make it difficult.
Woman: IT HAS to be in person!
Lily: ????
Woman: Well, my husband has nobody to talk to and... I would really like for you to come twice a week for 4 hours with the excuse of the art project to keep him company. You know, to chat, to keep him engaged... while I go shopping.
Lily: So what you want is a companion?
Woman: [smiling] Wrong. Not a plain companion. A paid one.
* Since will no longer have a job starting this Friday, I've been "forced" to take a month off in Europe.
